Joyful spirit of new year

AIR RAVES
By ANTHONY THANASAYAN

MORE than 5,000 Muslims turned out at the National Mosque in Kuala Lumpur on the eve of Maal Hijrah (or Awal Muharram on Jan 31) for special prayers to welcome the New Year.

In conjunction with the special occasion, Nasional FM (NFM) aired a few minutes of Quranic readings just before midnight on Jan 30, after which the Bahasa Malaysia broadcaster switched to local ballads before playing our national anthem at midnight, followed by the latest news.

Best104 FM from Johor, also in BM, played some Arabic religious tunes before following up with soothing instrumentals and broadcasting Quranic verses at midnight.

Era FM, on its part, chose a rather creative way to begin the Muslim New Year.

The Malay station under Astro’s Airtime Management and Programming network presented a feature on HIV and AIDS, via the voice of a child who has the disease.

While the timing of this feature is questionable, it nevertheless was effective in driving home the message about the importance of a clean lifestyle.

Suara Islam, heard in the Klang Valley on FM91.10MHz, was quite a surprise.

Instead of the anticipated religious sermon, the station opted to discuss tourism at midnight. Talk about breaking away from stereotype.

All the deejays on the graveyard shift that morning were in the best of spirit. It was a joy to tune in to their shows.

But the best on-air topic of the day for callers to share their views went to Muzik FM.

The RTM station got listeners to talk about their hopes for the New Year, as well as what they would do if the unexpected happens.

It wasn’t difficult to pick the winners for the afternoon and evening hours of City Day (Feb 1) in Kuala Lumpur.

TraxxFM’s Double D and Roundhead reigned supreme on their weekday Traffic show from 3pm till 6pm, with their well-researched information, tips and sometimes outrageous advice for listeners on the road.

That afternoon, the deejays got listeners to give candid responses to a scenario – if they had loaned their car to a friend or kin, and the borrower crashed the car: “What’s the first thing you’d want to know: the condition of the driver or the state of your car?”
