Everyday delight

AIR RAVES
By ANTHONY THANASAYAN

LAST week I griped about the lousy kick-off to World Cup coverage on our local radio stations.

Since then, things have improved somewhat – thanks to the efforts of The Star over Red fm which the newspaper operates.

Football Everyday, launched on June 9, is a month-long, 15-minute show on Red. The only special of its kind on radio, the show comes on daily at 6pm. Listeners can view the podcast of the programme on http://podcast.thestar.com.my/.

Football Everyday provides a quick review of the previous day’s matches, as well as information about the teams and footballers to look out for in each night’s matches. The show also features special guests and contests.

The regular presenters Zack Yusof, Daryl Goh and Brian Martin are an interesting mix.

Zack, who chairs the discussions, is clearly the best speaker among the three. He not only maintains the time check of the show but also offers some interesting perspectives.

Daryl does not pull any punches when stating his views while Brian is sharp with his observations of goalscoring (or lack of) exploits.

It would help, though, if the guys could go easy on the jargon for the benefit of non-football-savvy listeners.

Zack and Daryl are entertainment writers of The Star’s StarTwo section while their colleague Brian is acting editor of StarMetro.

Idol lessons

IT’S exactly a month ago today when 29-year-old Taylor Hicks was crowned the fifth American Idol on the popular US reality TV show.

The two-hour finale was telecast live at eight in the morning in Malaysia. Now that the dust has settled, what lessons could we learn from the experience, especially on radio?

My listening time began two hours before the live show started on May 25 and here’s what I discovered:

A number of our English FM stations chose to highlight the event. This was super for those who couldn’t watch the live show. The pre-coverage on radio only made the Idol event more exciting for listeners, who I’m sure couldn’t wait to get home from work to catch the repeat at 8pm on TV.

Hitz.fm, which was the official station for the event, gave the best morning coverage. The Morning Crew rightly predicted that Hicks would triumph over Katharine McPhee. The station also proudly proclaimed that it had sent a listener and her mum to watch the Idol live at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.

TraxxFM, which also backed Hicks to win, got everyone confused when the deejays said the programme was going to take place “later tonight” when showtime was only 1½ hours away.

Fly.fm played Daniel Powter’s Bad Day – the signature tune on American Idol. For listeners who needed cheering up, presenter Fly Guy gave them this gem for happiness: “Christmas is only seven months away!”

Red fm’s Nellie Ng and David Chew said nothing about American Idol all morning, until the final minutes before the show was about to begin. By then, it was time to switch from radio to the real thing on TV.
