The 99 beautiful names

Air Raves
By ANTHONY THANASAYAN

BBC World Service (WS) will be looking at the 99 beautiful names of Allah, which Muslims believe is revealed in the Quran.

Each one, according to the faithful, highlights a different attribute or quality of Allah. And the practice of repeating and chanting these names is particularly important to Sufis, who follow the mystical branch of Islam.

In the WS’ weekly religious affairs feature called Heart and Soul today, Muslims from different backgrounds reflect on what the 99 names mean to them – as a key that unlocks the meaning of life, or an incentive to overcome one's own human weaknesses.

Heart and Soul, which airs for 30 minutes, can be heard from 9.32am today. The shortwave frequencies to tune in to the programme in Malaysia are 6.195kHz, 49m and 9.410kHz, 31m.

Listeners on the Internet can call up the show at:

Classic Change

Did you catch last month’s special broadcast of the merger between Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) Klasik fm radio channel and Nasional fm from the Angkasapuri studios in Kuala Lumpur?

Well, I certainly did and here are my impressions of the event:

First of all, I thought that the fanfare and importance given to the occasion was terrific. I can’t remember the last time –or any other time – when a radio event was also carried live on national television.

TV1’s 8pm Bahasa Malaysia news was shortened by about 15 minutes to make time for the special event, which gave TV audiences and radio listeners a rare opportunity to witness Information Minister Datuk Zainuddin Maidin walking into the radio studio and put his headphones on.

The next half hour or so featured the minister having live chats with several top leaders of various states in live crossover broadcasts.

After the VIP interviews, viewers and listeners were treated to a live entertainment show until the event came to a close around 11pm.

There are several areas in which RTM can improve: The crossovers, which were stretched out for 30 minutes, would have been better if some music or break was added between the sessions.

This would have helped listeners to concentrate on what was being said and also to maintain their interest.

Simply airing the TV entertainment show straight wasn’t a good idea at all. Radio listeners who didn’t have the advantage of visuals were in the dark as to who was performing next, what the audiences were laughing at in the comedy drama, etc, etc.

For instance, props and aids such as a wheelchair and wigs that were used on stage had no effect on listeners who could not see them. Klasik Nasional – the new name given to Klasik fm and Nasional fm after the merger – should have thought of having radio announcers to narrate what was happening on stage for the benefit of listeners.

Since the two radio stations merged on Aug 12, Klasik Nasional has been airing classic and traditional Malay tracks as well as contemporary and nationalistic numbers round the clock, nationwide.

Previously, only about 270,000 listeners in the Klang Valley were able to tune in to Klasik fm, and for only six hours a day. The change should help RTM to reach a much larger audience.
