Jazz like heaven

Air Raves
By ANTHONY THANASAYAN

LISTENERS in search of some really cool jazz sounds need look no further than their radio.

By simply tuning in to TraxxFM’s Jazz Selecta on their FM bands, they will be in jazz heaven!

The weekly show can be heard every Tuesday at 10pm. Listeners can expect three hours of various styles, from bebop to boogie-woogie, Latin to fusion, and even something called free jazz.

The RTM English broadcaster has not only touted the programme as “the best selections in jazz music” but also proudly declared that Jazz Selecta is “the only source for free-to-air jazz music for listeners on a national channel”.

Hosted by Jezza and Maya, the show recently featured guest interviews with 44-year-old Grammy-winning saxophonist Branford Marsalis, jazz drummer Billy Cobham whom Jezza described as a “stand-up and down-to-earth kinda guy”, and The Idea of North, the well-known Australian a cappella group.

Local jazz musicians are not left out. In fact, their works are a staple of Jazz Selecta each week.

Like foreign artistes, our local guys and gals are scrutinised by the programme’s lively hosts. They have also been invited into the studio to perform one or two numbers for listeners. Among the artistes featured were Anita Sarawak, saxophonists Julian Chan and Greg Lyons, and pianist/vocalist David Gomez.

“Our show is not only about smooth and easy listening. We constantly look out for fresh talent as well,” said Maya.

“We try to expose our audience to the great diversity that’s jazz music,” she added.

This Tuesday’s guest on Jazz Selecta is Datuk Mokhzani Ismail, the director of the RTM Orchestra who has won the prestigious Dizzy Gillespie award.

Halloween happenings

A MONTH ago around this time, some radio stations chose to mark Halloween’s Day on Oct 31, while others ignored the occasion.

Red fm morning deejays David Chew and Nell Ng gave out invitations to a local Halloween party while their afternoon counterparts Tim Ho and Terry Ong talked about scary movies.

Paranormal investigator Syed Abdullah Al-Attas and his Seekers team were in Hitz.fm’s studio to thrill morning listeners with their latest activities and discoveries.

International broadcaster Voice of America (VOA) from Washington DC took listeners on a radio tour of haunted houses across the United States.

“Many Americans make it a point to go out to parties dressed up as witches, devils and ghosts with some hoping to actually bump into real ghosts,” the VOA said.

BBC World Service’s World Drama last Sunday aired the first of a two-part (60 minutes each) radio adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel, Dracula.

Listeners can hear the final part of the drama, which was adapted by the acclaimed Scottish playwright and poet Liz Lochhead, today on World Service radio and the Internet.

BBC World Service radio: 10am; repeat at 6am tomorrow. For frequencies, please check the airwaves listing on the right.
