Spreading the word

Air Raves
By ANTHONY THANASAYAN

Woman Power” is alive and kicking, and men everywhere had better sit up and take notice. Our radio stations have certainly been abuzz with messages of intolerance ... towards violence, since Nov 25.

The day in question was the “International Day Against Violence Against Women” which also marked the start of the “Sixteen Days of Activism Against Gender Violence” campaign.

The number 16 marks the numbers of years since this particular campaign was launched. The 16-day campaign, which ends today, is a strategy employed by women’s activism groups worldwide to push for the elimination of all forms of gender-based violence perpetrated against women.

This is done in a variety of ways from getting governments to legislate against gender violence and discrimination to holding forums and demonstrating solidarity with all women.

One feminine rights group that has been at the forefront of the campaign is the Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) which is based in Petaling Jaya.

Representatives from WAO (with support from other groups like Sisters In Islam and the Malaysian Aids Council), do in fact spread their message of non-violence and women’s rights as a matter of course.

Among the radio stations that welcomed WAO and their team on board were nationwide English broadcasters RedFM and Radio Televisyen Malaysia’s (RTM) TraxxFM, RTM’s Tamil round-the-clock broadcaster Minnal FM and Selangor FM which airs its programmes in Bahasa Malaysia.

Some of these stations have been so supportive of WAO’s efforts that they invited the well-known NGO to talk on women issues many times during the campaign.

I managed to catch several of the on-air interviews – including the one on November 22, last month, on RedFM.

Executive Directors of WAO Ivy Josiah and Amnesty International Malaysia (AIM) Josef Roy Benedict were the studio guests on Nell and David’s Mid Week Crisis segment at 8am.

The two guests spoke about violence against women and pointed out that it was a real problem in the country.

Josiah proudly revealed that WAO has been able to get their posters into every single police station in Malaysia so that victims know where to get help and support when they are in need of it.

Benedict explained that AIM was constantly targeting men with the gender equality message because, “men were often the cause of violence against women.”

Although I thought that the interview went down well with listeners as a whole, deejays Nell and David could do a few things to improve their interviews in future.

For a start they should make the breaks short so as to keep the topic coherent for listeners (during one of the breaks, Josiah and Benedict “disappeared” for about 20 minutes!). The music that is interspersed during the interview segments could easily be appropriate to the theme. And finally, they should be serious when such a topic is discussed. There is no need to crack jokes to sound light-hearted.

Nonetheless, it was a great interview programme all the same, and kept listeners informed about the special causes that can improve our lives.
