Merriment in the air, on air
AIR RAVES
By ANTHONY THANASAYAN
IT'S Christmas Eve, everyone! The sounds of X'mas are everywhere. On radio, too, of course. Broadcasters at home and abroad are padding up their programming with yuletide songs galore.
BBC World Service (WS) has lined up a number of festive fare from London for international listeners to tune in to. You can do this either via shortwave (see frequency details in The Star’s radio/TV page) and on the WS website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/default.stm
Locate the show you want to listen and then click on it.
WS specials include:
Today
8.06am: Being Different. In the first of this three-part programme, Geoff Adams-Spink talks to various disabled people around the globe about their personal achievements. The show starts in Denmark where a tetraplegic (paralysed in four limbs) has designed a low-level wheelchair that adjusts to different table heights.
6pm: King Lear by William Shakespeare. This two-hour radio drama boasts of an all-star cast with Philip Madoc as Lear and Andrew Sachs (who plays Manuel in Fawlty Towers) as the Fool. The play is about a proud king who forces his three daughters to express their loyalty to him in order to divide his kingdom between them.
Christmas Day
11pm – 12.30am: A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. For a truly religious feel and flavour, here’s a chance to catch this yearly event (since 1918) from King’s College in Cambridge broadcast live on the WS. (The church service broadcast is repeated on Xmas Day at 11am.)
4pm: Queen Elizabeth II’s Christmas Message to the Commonwealth. The British monarch's brief speech, which has been a X'mas tradition of sorts for many WS listeners around the world, will be followed by Britain’s national anthem.
Over the local airwaves, fans of RedFM over the last week have been busy trying to choose their favourite Christmas songs from a list of 20 Yuletide tunes listed on the broadcaster’s website.
Morning deejays Nell Ng and David Chew have been running the website poll – which closes today – which allows listeners to vote on their choices. (For details, go to: http://red1049.com/)
The results will be announced during their show tomorrow from 7am to 10am. The hosts have refused to divulge the exact time that they will be unveiling the winning songs, and playing them all so that means we’ll just have to stay tuned throughout the entire show to find out.
Over the past fortnight, RedFM listeners have also been sending in their season’s greetings to their friends and loved ones to the broadcaster, which is operated by The Star.
The final day to send those festive shout-outs is today. DJ Alvin will compile and read them out tomorrow between 2pm and 4pm.
Don’t forget to catch Tim Ho and Terry Ong tomorrow. The deejays hope to add some Christmas magic for listeners by having carollers in the studio to perform live from 5pm until 8pm.
If you want Christmassy music that you can keep, a good album to look out for is Starry, Starry Christmas by Sony BMG Music Entertainment. It features songs by Ray Conniff and the Ray Conniff Singers, Dinah Shore, Whitney Houston and even Il Divo that will appeal to all age groups and tastes.
I’ve been informed by Sony BMG that the album has been distributed to all our radio stations so keep your ears open for the tracks.
Happy Christmas!
