No Golden moment

Air Raves
By ANTHONY THANASAYAN

WELL, I guess that it is true what they say about our local radio.

One never knows when our FM broadcasters will suddenly turn hot, or become extremely cold, over an important event.

And if an event does get attention, there’s also not much consistency in the way the radio reports are presented.

In case you’re wondering what I’m talking about, it’s the 64th Annual Golden Globes ceremony in Los Angeles on Jan 15.

It was evening in LA when the curtains were raised on the dazzling film awards – a not-to-be-missed event that is often indicative of how the prestigious Oscars in the following month will take shape.

In Malaysia, it was Tuesday, Jan 16, at 9am when the live transmission came on over Ntv7.

It was also on Astro Channel 70’s satellite broadcast. A five-minute telecast delay was noted on Astro.

These were the only two TV stations to carry the event live as it unfolded. The stations also carried repeats of the telecast later in the day.

TraxxFM’s world news update made no mention of the Globes as it kicked off at the same time as the radio news broadcast.

Surely this was a worthy item to be featured considering that radio deejays talk about the latest movies, actors and actresses all the time.

And the Globes was indeed a significant moment for the stars.

Turning on my automatic bandwidth scanner, the situation on the other stations was about the same.

There were international news bits now and then – even entertainment news, but the Globes was not a major item on the broadcasts.

None of the deejays stopped to talk about it or seriously looked at the nominees for the occasion.

Red fm did pause to mention the awards.

However, its treatment of the Globes was so trivial it wasn’t worth the listen – or even the mention, for that matter.

FlyFM ran promotional announcements that the Globes would be aired on Ntv7.

But there were no updates of the results on the station for almost an hour before I switched over to another FM band in disappointment.

Lite FM mentioned the Globes on its 10am news update.

However, again, I thought that the information given was too general instead of filling listeners in on what happened during the last hour in LA.

Seeing that Astro was on the ball with the Globes live telecast, I don’t see how this would have been a problem for the radio station to deliver, since the broadcaster is from the Astro family.

What is more worrying about all this is the fact that in less than a month’s time – on Feb 25, to be exact – Hollywood’s most prestigious awards night will be taking place once again in Los Angeles.

It’s the 79th Academy Awards Presentation by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, or Oscars as we know it.

It will be Monday morning about 9am again (our time) when the live transmission comes through on TV.

Let’s hope that all our radio stations will do our listeners a favour by coming up with something to make the special event strongly felt on radio too.

Despite living in the cyber age, Anthony Thanasayan insists that radio still provides a unique window on the world. When he isn’t scanning bandwidths, he trains service dogs for disabled people through his organisation, Petpositive (Malaysian Animal-Assisted Therapy for the Disabled and Elderly Association).
