Idol fans vote radio stations out
AIR RAVES WITH ANTHONY THANASAYAN
CONGRATULATIONS to all you Jordin Sparks fans out there who have been rooting and praying for the 17-year-old to win the coveted American Idol 2007 title.
The place was at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles in California, USA. The event was the finale of the sixth season of the popular TV singing talent show which was beamed to the world live on May 24 (Malaysian time).
The teenager from Glendale, Arizona, delivered what millions expected of her: to become the youngest American Idol.
What an electrifying moment it was during those nail-biting closing minutes of the show when the envelope was opened, and the winner announced!
Astro’s Channel 70 was the only television broadcast station to air the finals “live”, with several minutes of delay time.
It was just after 8am on Thursday when the direct transmission came on. However by 7.30am, I was already tuning in to many of the English radio stations.
I was keen to find out if our FM broadcasters were airing any “Idol specials” that morning.
Much to my chagrin, I discovered that RTM’s TraxxFM was hopeless.
For one, the Wake Up! show deejays Nigel Green and Navsta, who usually add oomph to my mornings, had nothing to say about American Idol. (Hey guys, what planet are you from?)
Secondly, TraxxFM’s hourly news updates also kept mum about it during the two-hour event.
All I heard instead were lots of very serious (and even boring) political news, from more violence in Iraq to goings-on at Wall Street and Microsoft Corporation.
I think it’s high time that RTM’s Radio News Centre start including news on entertainment (and also science, health, etc) as part of their daily news.
Spotlighting only on political news or disasters can depress a listener.
American Idol was the perfect opportunity and news break to pique listeners’ interest that morning. When the results were revealed by 10am, TraxxFM news didn’t even report it!
The only local FM station that was worth listening to for Idol specials was Hitz.fm. They provided listeners with snippets of the show and played songs by some of the past winners.
But there were major letdowns with the broadcaster as well. The snippets Hitz.fm aired were inconsistent and scanty. Many significant parts of the Idol final were left out by the Morning Crew JJ and Rudy so listeners missed out on them.
Instead of telling listeners to tune in to the repeat broadcasts of Idol on TV later in the evening, they should’ve made an attempt to fill them in on what was happening.
These include the guest appearances of music greats like Tony Bennett, Bette Midler and Gladys Knight. And, rather than just mention a star’s name, give a brief profile of them.
It was also a pity that the station decided to play some of its regular features during the Idols live event.
The most disappointing moment of all was the fact that Hitz.fm took an unbelievable delay of 15 minutes to reveal news of Sparks’ win after the results were announced on Channel 70.
MIX FM ludicrously took even longer to inform its listeners.
Correct me if I am wrong, but don't we tune in to a radio station so that we can be among the FIRST rather than the LAST to know of a significant development?
Despite living in the cyber age, the writer insists that radio still provides a unique window on the world. When he isn’t scanning bandwidths, he helps to raise awareness of positive living with pets through his organisation, Petpositive (Malaysian Animal-Assisted Therapy for the Disabled and Elderly Association).
