A day to remember
AIR RAVES
By ANTHONY THANASAYAN
IN all the time I’ve been writing this column, I can’t recall a single episode or moment – especially in reviewing a local programme – when I had nothing to criticise.
But June 5 was different.
It was the day after Loga of the Alleycats died. And the programme I tuned in to was The Wake Up Show on Traxx fm hosted by the zany duo of Greenman and Navsta.
That morning, the mood and tone took on an uncharacteristically sedate mode.
Amusing stories and jokes which usually make up the show were replaced with moving and inspiring words by guests who spoke on the show via the phone.
That morning, Malaysians paused in the rush hour to remember Loganathan Arumugam who had lost his battle with lung cancer. He passed away in hospital in Penang.
Traxx fm ran a two-hour tribute to honour the 54-year-old singer and flutist, who together with the Alleycats, had entertained fans for over three decades.
The 8am show began with a live crossover with a brief report by the Alleycats’ sound technician Tony at Loga’s home in Penang.
First to say a few words was Antonio from the Sweet September band who likened Loga to Stevie Wonder and the Three Dog Night.
Veteran singer Datuk D.J. Dave, who came on next, said he had been a fan of the Alleycats since the 1970s.
Loga’s brother and Alleycats frontman David told Greenman and Navsta that he missed his late sibling who was “one hell of a guy”.
Singer Zainal Abidin choked back tears for having lost “a friend and hero in the music industry”.
Loga’s son Vigneswaran thought of him as “a wonderful and dedicated father”.
Musician-actor M. Nasir spoke about happy times with Loga when he was invited to their home for lunch.
Penang Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said: “We have lost a true Malaysian ... the Alleycats’ songs have cut across racial barriers.”
Traxx fm shelved all its regulars to allow these special guests to pay tribute to Loga, and the station played the Alleycats numbers in between interviews.
I might not have known much about the Alleycats but by the time the show was over, I felt as if I had known Loga.
It was a shining moment for Traxx fm to pay homage to the beloved Malaysian musician. The station got the story of the day to listeners in a way that other radio networks and even TV broadcasters didn’t.
Loga would have felt honoured. RIP.
Despite living in the cyber age, the writer insists that radio still provides a unique window on the world. When he isn’t scanning bandwidths, he helps to raise awareness of positive living with pets through his organisation, Petpositive (Malaysian Animal-Assisted Therapy for the Disabled and Elderly Association).
